INTRODUCTION: The whole purpose of wheelchairs and scooters is to give the user freedom of movement- without depending on others whenever possible. So taking the equipment onto other vehicles is obviously very important if that level of independence is to be maintained. Unfortunately the question on =how= a wheelchair or scooter is to be transported is usually not thought through at the time of purchase- particularly by first-time buyers. Many times it's because the user has become such a prisoner of the home that even the thought of "going somewhere", particularly somewhere far isn't even present. Once a level of mobility is obtained, the desire to go further "out into the world" is natural. But it only works if the wheelchair or scooter can come too. This section gives tips on transporting equipment, selecting equipment (including wheelchairs) with an eye towards transporting, and a minor observation on some destinations. As far as using a wheelchair or scooter instead of an automobile, please remember that drivers cannot always see scooters or wheelchairs (even with red flags on them), and they are so slow compared to a car (usually under 5 mph) that they pose a major threat to the user when mixed with automobiles. A very nice pamphlet on DRIVING SAFETY has been produced and can be viewed by clicking here. (used with permission). INFORMATION ON TRAVELING:
